Savitribai Phule was born on January 3, 1831, and was the first woman to be a teacher, and also the first person to set up a school for girls in India along with her husband, Jyotiba Phule. Often called the mother of feminism in India, Savitribai Phule educated those the mainstream forgot, across caste, class and gender lines.
